9th CINet PhD Workshop

• Objective

The CINet PhD workshop offers PhD students a unique possibility to present and discuss, receive feedback, and exchange comments and views on their research in an inspiring academic community of fellow PhD students and experienced researchers active in the CINet community.

The PhD workshop will be held on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September 2009, before the 10th International CINet Conference in Brisbane, Australia, and ends at the afternoon of the last conference day (8 September 2009), while there are also meetings during the conference.

The seminar equivalents a workload of 3 ECTS.

• Structure

The CINet PhD workshop offers two classes of attendance, depending on the experience of the PhD student. Note that this classification relates to full time students; for part time students longer time periods might be more relevant.

1. The first year’s class is aimed at students who are in the first or early second year of their PhD research. These participants present and discuss their research design.
2. The second class is for students who have taken part in the first class or are in the final stages of their Ph D. These participants are typically in the early third or fourth year of their studies. The presentations by, and discussion with, these students focus on results and (preliminary) conclusions (contribution to the theory and/or practice).

Students who have gone through both classes and have completed their PhD thesis, or are about to do so, are strongly encouraged to attend the PhD workshop as well. The interaction between these students and those at earlier stages of their studies has been a feature of previous CINet PhD Workshops, and appeared to provide valuable networking and learning opportunities for all research students involved.
All PhD students working on topics related to continuous innovation are also strongly encouraged to attend the annual CINet PhD Seminar on Research in Continuous Innovation.

The PhD workshop during the CINet conference
In addition to attending the Saturday and Sunday sessions, the participants will receive a specific task, namely to review and discuss conference papers within a small group facilitated by the junior faculty involved. This will provide students with an opportunity to learn how to review papers and assess the research methodology and results presented. At the end of the CINet conference, an evaluation session with all the participating students and the workshop faculty will provide a forum for reflecting on and discussing the learning moments, and exchanging ideas and views with other researchers in the CINet community.

• Work mode: presentation, discussion and reflection

• First year's participants to the CINet PhD workshop must provide a written project description as part of their application for the PhD workshop. Each student will be given a slot of one hour – 30 minutes for presentation, followed by 30 minutes discussion.
• Second year's participants must submit a working paper covering their initial findings and conclusions. Also these students get one hour to present (30 minutes) and discuss (30 minutes) their research.

• Application and fees

To apply for participation in the CINet PhD workshop, all applicants must submit a short project description (maximum 5 pages) with name, project title, affiliation, as well as a recommendation from their supervisor. This set of documents must be sent by e-mail to the conference secretariat (Jeannette Visser-Groeneveld) no later than June 25, 2009.

The combined fee for the CINet PhD workshop and the CINet Conference is € 400 for CINet members and € 450 for non-CINet members. The fee includes:

• Participation in the CINet PhD workshop, the workshop lunch and dinner, coffee/tea and refreshments.
• Participation in the 10th International CINet conference, including proceedings, lunches, refreshments and conference dinner.

• Notification of acceptance and preparation

The deadline for registration for the PhD workshop is June 25 2009. Applicants will be notified of the acceptance or rejection of their proposal by 2 July 2009. Successful applicants will then be asked to prepare and submit no later than 20 August 2009, a short paper describing their research design (first year's group), or a working paper covering the preliminary results and conclusions of their research (second year's group).
